This 3D-printed Museum Replica reproduces a surviving section of the Amazon frieze from the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos, dated to about 350 BCE. The original marble slab formed part of one of the most celebrated tomb monuments of antiquity and shows a battle between Greeks and Amazons. In the preserved scene, Greek warriors press in on two Amazons, while at the right a mounted Amazon struggles amid the violence of combat. The relief is marked by strong projection, tightly controlled movement, and a composition that translates myth into a forceful and physical image. As a replica, the object preserves the essential sculptural character of the ancient slab in a form suitable for display, collecting, and study.
The original belonged to the sculptural program of the Mausoleum built at Halikarnassos for Mausolos in the mid-4th century BCE, probably under the patronage of Artemisia II. This was one of the most admired monuments of the ancient world, and its fame was such that the word “mausoleum” later entered general use for monumental tombs. The Amazon frieze formed part of a wider visual program in which mythological battle conveyed power, prestige, and heroic order. This particular section is especially notable for its contrast between close infantry combat and the unstable movement of the mounted figure, giving the relief both tension and clarity.
