This 3D printed replica is based on a Roman marble group dated to the 2nd century CE, now in the British Museum, London. The composition shows a satyr seizing a nymph as she twists away in resistance. Their bodies are tightly interlocked, creating a compact sculptural group defined by tension, movement, and imbalance. The subject belongs to the mythological world of satyrs and nymphs, but the scene is not calm or decorative in a simple sense. Force, struggle, and dramatic physical interaction are central to the work.
The original sculpture was found near Tivoli in Italy, an area long associated with elite Roman villas and refined sculptural display. Like many Roman mythological works, it reflects a strong engagement with earlier Greek and Hellenistic artistic traditions. The group was probably made for an upper-class setting, where mythological imagery functioned as a sign of cultivation, taste, and status. Today, the work is also understood through a more critical lens, since the nymph’s resistance is fundamental to the meaning of the scene.
This replica preserves the visual structure of the ancient sculpture as it survives today. The intertwined figures, the forceful movement of the satyr, and the twisting body of the nymph make it a technically and visually complex object. It is a work that combines mythological subject matter with a highly concentrated sculptural composition, making it especially suited to those with an interest in Roman art, classical mythology, and the history of collecting.
Available Materials
White Nylon
A polished nylon option with a smoother surface to the touch. This is the most economical material choice and offers a clean, refined presentation of the form.
Black Nylon
Finished with a Color Touch treatment after post-print processing. This improves resistance to external conditions, scratching, and rubbing, while also giving the object a uniform black surface and stable, consistent color across production batches.
Bronze
Produced through a metal casting process using a master model created from 3D printing. This method allows the replica to be made as an elegant metal object with strong visual presence.
Gold Plated Brass
Also produced through metal casting from a 3D printed master model. This material gives the replica a more luxurious and decorative character while preserving the form of the original sculpture.
White Rhodium Plated Brass
Made through the same casting process as the other metal versions. The white rhodium finish gives the object a bright, cool-toned, elegant appearance.
Production Note
For objects that are too large for the production process in a given material, the replica is made in a smaller scale than the original. In some cases, hollowing is also added in order to reduce production cost and make the final piece more affordable.
