This 3D-printed replica is based on the Strangford Shield, a Roman marble copy of the shield associated with the colossal Athena Parthenos that once stood inside the Parthenon in Athens. The original composition was among the most admired images of Athena in antiquity, and this smaller version preserves some of its most distinctive features: the central gorgoneion, the surrounding battle scene, and the dense, dramatic arrangement of figures across the surface. As a replica, it offers access to a design that survives today only through later copies and fragments, making it a meaningful object for anyone interested in Greek mythology, classical sculpture, and the long afterlife of ancient art.
The scene shown on the shield is an amazonomachy, a battle between Greeks and Amazons, a subject closely tied to ideas of conflict, order, and divine protection in ancient Greek art. At the centre appears the head of a gorgon, usually understood as Medusa, whose image served an apotropaic function: to ward off danger and protect the bearer. In the ancient context, this made the design especially appropriate for Athena, goddess of war and patron deity of Athens. The composition is both decorative and symbolic, combining movement, tension, and protection in a single highly recognisable image.
This replica translates that historic design into a physical object suitable for display, study, or collecting. It reflects the relief structure of the original surviving shield and preserves the compact, sculptural character of the composition. As with many replicas of ancient works, the aim is not only to reproduce the image, but also to make an important classical design available in a durable and accessible form.
Available materials
- White Nylon – polished for a smoother surface and a softer tactile finish. This is the most economical option.
- Black Nylon – finished with Color Touch after post-print treatment for a uniform black surface, strong consistency between production batches, and good resistance to scratching and rubbing.
- Bronze – created through a casting process based on a 3D-printed master model, giving the object an elegant and substantial metal character.
- Gold-Plated Brass – produced through metal casting from a precisely made master model, with a refined finish and a distinctly elevated appearance.
- White Rhodium-Plated Brass – cast from a 3D-printed master model and finished with white rhodium plating for a bright, elegant metal surface.
Please note that objects that are too large for a given production process may be produced at a reduced scale compared to the original.
