3D-Printed Replica of the Herm of Ephesus
This is a precise 3D-printed copy of a Roman marble herm from Ephesus, dated to the second half of the 2nd century CE. The original sculpture consists of a quadrangular shaft surmounted by a bearded head of a mature divinity, most commonly identified as Hermes, with male genitals carved on the shaft. It is held in the Ephesos Museum, Vienna.
The replica is available in the following materials:
– White nylon: Polished for a smooth surface finish. This is the most economical option.
– Black nylon: Treated after printing with a Color Touch finish. The surface is uniform in colour, resistant to scratching and rubbing, and suitable for external conditions. Colour consistency is maintained across production batches.
– Bronze, gold-plated brass, and white rhodium-plated brass: Produced by lost-wax casting. A wax master model is printed and enclosed in a plaster mould. Liquid metal is then poured into the mould, replacing the wax. The result is a metal object with a clean, elegant surface.
Dimensions of the printed replicas:
– Nylon versions: 5.1 × 12 cm (2.0 × 4.7 inches)
– Metal versions: 1.7 × 4 cm (0.7 × 1.6 inches)
Objects that exceed the size limits of the production process in the respective materials are manufactured at a reduced scale relative to the original. Hollowing is applied in some cases to lower the price.
