3D-Printed Replica of the Lewis Chessmen Queen
This is a high-fidelity 3D-printed reproduction of a 12th-century walrus-ivory chess queen from the Lewis Chessmen hoard. The figure is depicted seated on an ornamented chair, wearing a floriated crown over a veil, with a mantle and tunic. The right hand is raised to the cheek in a contemplative gesture, and the chair back features adjacent leaf scrolls with cloth draped over the top. The replica captures the original’s precise proportions, surface modelling and decorative details.
Available materials
- White nylon: Finished with polishing, which produces a smooth surface that is pleasant to the touch. This is the most economical option.
- Black nylon: Subjected to a post-printing treatment before application of the Color Touch finish. The resulting parts are sufficiently resistant for external exposure and withstand scratching and rubbing. Colour remains stable and consistent across production batches, making the material suitable for larger quantities of identical pieces. The surface presents a uniform colour with high visual quality.
- Bronze, gold-plated brass and white rhodium-plated brass: Produced by lost-wax casting. A master model, typically printed in wax, serves as an exact replica of the finished object. A plaster mould is formed around the master; liquid metal is then injected, displacing the wax through a tree-like gating system. The process yields metal components with a refined, elegant appearance.
Objects that exceed the size limits of the respective production processes are manufactured at a reduced scale relative to the original. In certain cases, hollowing is introduced to lower the unit price.
